Choose Sword & Shield for active defense and a readable melee start. Choose Hammer for charged pressure and stronger commitment. Neither route replaces timing, spacing, or an exit plan.

Sword & Shield or Hammer
Sword & Shield
This is the practical defensive starter. Raise the shield deliberately, read the incoming hit, use manual block or the wider Perfect Parry window, answer with a short punish, then return to a safe stance. Shield talents received PvE improvements at launch.
Hammer
This route asks for greater commitment. Charge when the target is occupied or locked into an animation, steer the attack, land the high-value hit, and avoid beginning another charge when the opponent can simply disengage or interrupt. Launch changes improved several Hammer PvE interactions.
Sword & Shield is not automatic safety. The August 6 update fixed an abnormal auto-block issue, so old demonstrations that appear to defend without correct input should not be copied. A current build must succeed through manual block timing, positioning, and resource control.
PRACTICAL LOOP •
Build a Repeatable Exchange
Defensive loop
Approach behind the shield only when movement remains available. Block or parry one readable attack, answer with a short sequence, then stop before the opponent’s next protected action. If stamina, energy, or positioning is gone, disengage instead of holding the shield forever.
Hammer loop
Create the charge window with distance, terrain, an enemy recovery animation, or teammate control. Commit to one charged attack, check whether the target stayed in range, and reset. Repeated blind charges turn the weapon’s damage into missed time.
